Freemasonry is often referred to as a way of life, for it embraces many important principles which it encourages its members to adopt. Its main teachings reflect on our duty to God, to our country, to our fellow man and to ourselves. It encourages the practice of high moral standards and ethical conduct at all times. 
FMN How old is Freemasonry?

Nobody really knows. Its origins certainly date back many centuries to the stonemasons who built the great cathedrals of Europe in the Middle Ages and even beyond. The tools that they used, and the somewhat exclusive society of those days, are still used symbolically in our Lodges and in the general structure of our Craft. The actual practices, procedures and basic principles that are used worldwide were formalised with the establishment of the United Grand Lodge of England in 1717 and have remained largely unchanged since then.
FMN Why is Masonry a Secret Society?

Despite many efforts throughout time to discredit Freemasonry as a secret society, it is no such thing. It does nothing to conceal its existence or its activities. The so-called secrets are simply details of private ceremonies designed to instruct new members and impress on them the lessons the Craft has to offer, including the virtue of self-discipline. The ceremonies are of no importance to those who are not members, whilst knowledge of them help Freemasons recognise each other.
FMN Is Masonry a Religion?

Definitely not. Freemasonry accepts men of all faiths, and its principles are compatible with the teachings of the world’s recognised religions. However, all members are required to hold to the belief in a Supreme Being and proper recognition is given to it during ceremonies, including the open display of the appropriate Sacred Writings.
FMN Can anybody become a Mason?

Freemasonry is open to all worthy and recommended men of every race, colour and creed who wish to embrace its principles. It is often said that Freemasonry accepts good men and strives to make them better. Once admitted, and irrespective of everyday status within the community, men meet as equals within the Lodge where they can enjoy the company of like-minded men, united in their common interest of promoting brotherly love, relief and truth, and in practising the lessons of self-discipline, fortitude, justice and charity. Anybody joining in the hope of material gain or advancement will be seriously disappointed.
FMN What will it cost in time and money?

As with membership of any association or club there will be an annual fee as well as other incidental expenses about which you should inform yourself before joining. There will also be a time commitment in attending Lodge meetings, something that every member is expected to regulary do. For these reasons, and not least that recognised Freemasonry is restricted to male membership, candidates for Freemasonry are expected to have fully discussed the implications of their membership with their partners.
